Two Highways In Mumbai Were Just Demoted So Restaurants Near Them Can Serve Booze

on

As a response to the Supreme Court order banning the sale of liquor 500 metres from highways nationwide, the state government in Maharashtra has denotified the Eastern Express Highway (EEH) and Western Express Highway (WEH) in Mumbai.

Highways Get Denoted

The state government handed the two former highways to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority for maintenance and repairs. They will have control over the two roads for five years.

This has allowed restaurants and bars within 500 metres of the two roads to begin applying for their liquor licenses and serve alcohol. As of Sunday, 80% of the members of the Indian Hotel and Restaurant Association (AHAR) who have establishments near the two ex-highways got their liquor licenses back.

Major hotels and establishments were affected by the ban; many five star hotels near the airport were also next to the Westerner Express highway including The Orchid, the Sahara Star and even the VIP lounge in the Mumbai domestic airport.
