This Woman Wore A Spaghetti Colander For Her Drivers License Photo Because She’s A Pastafarian

on

A woman in Massachusetts, Lindsay Miller, has gotten permission to wear a colander on her head for her driver’s license photograph. At first, Miller was not allowed to wear the colander as a hat. She then appealed to a member of the Secular Legal Society, Paty DeJuneas who fought for her right to wear the colander and won.

Now the obvious question is why did Lindsay Miller insist on being allowed to wear a colander on her head? Miller is a Pastafarian, a member of the Church Of The Flying Spaghetti Monster, who wears the colander as part of her religious garb.

The Church of The Flying Spaghetti Monster

The Church Of The Flying Spaghetti Monster was created as a tribute to the Flying Spaghetti Monster, a deity that was conceptualised to promote a light hearted view of religion. The Flying Spaghetti Monster is described as resembling a mass of spaghetti and meatballs; essentially holy spaghetti.

While most of the public sees the Church and Pastafarianism as a satire or parody, many members insist that it is a proper religion. It has thousands of followers across America and Europe with the website saying “We believe religion—say Christianity, Islam, Pastafarianism—does not require literal belief in order to provide spiritual enlightenment. Much of the transcendent experience of religion can be attributed to the community. And while some members of religion are indoctrinated True Believers, many are not. There are many levels of Belief and each is no more or less legitimate than the other.”

Meanwhile Miller commented “As a member of the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, I feel delighted that my Pastafarianism has been respected by the Massachusetts RMV. While I don’t think the government can involve itself in matters of religion, I do hope this decision encourages my fellow Pastafarian Atheists to come out and express themselves as I have,” she said.

While we don’t think we’ll go to the extent of converting to Pastafarianism, we can appreciate how enjoying a good bowl of pasta can become a holy experience, can’t you?
