Talking Juices, Smoothies, And More With Sowmya Ganesh Of Relish, Chennai
Relish, a brand of nutritional beverages, has become rapidly popular in the city, known for their beatifully constructed vegetable and fruit cold press juices, thick and healthy smoothies, and a nourishing range of nut milk. Their products consist of the freshest, organic, and most well-curated ingredients, brought together to give you the best nutrition ever, all in a bottle. Earlier this week, we had a short conversation with one of the minds behind Relish, Sowmya Ganesh, who gave us a little insight to the brand and it’s concepts.
About the minds behind Relish:
Relish is a brainchild of Ganesh Krishnan, an ex IT Banker who spent a good many years abroad and decided to come back to India and start something on his own. Upon his return to India, specifically to Chennai, he found that there is a clear opportunity in the health beverages sector in the city. Having been introduced to smoothies by wife Sowmya and having reaped its benefits in terms of taste, convenience and nutritive value, it was a natural choice of business for him.
⦁ Why almond milk?
“In order to serve the large vegan population of the city, some smoothies were made using almond or cashew milk instead of whole milk and then almond milk alone was made fresh and delivered as an alternative to diary. To make the almond milk more nutritive and interesting, more flavors such as dark chocolate, beet, carrot and turmeric were added.”
⦁ What is the response to your products in Chennai? Does the boom in the health industry indicate that we are getting smarter or weaker?
“The outstanding response to all our products is a testimony of the fact that there is an increased awareness about the need for good health and the determination of people to make healthy eating a part of one’s daily life.”
⦁ Can you tell us about the health benefits of the cold press juices, smoothies, and nut milk?
“All our products are made with highest quality, mostly organic produce, contain no preservatives, no added sugar, no artificial colors or flavors. Our focus is upon health and so the entire business model which is of subscription encourages people to include healthy stuff in their diet on a daily basis which will reap overall, lasting, sustainable health benefits over a period of time.”
⦁ Your smoothies were initially available only in the gym, how did you venture into a brand?
“Initially, the smoothies, blended with fruits, nuts and seeds in a base of whole milk, were made available at premium gyms across the city as a post work out recovery drink, using a subscription model. Slowly the ability of smoothies to serve as meal replacement as well, enabled the migration from gyms to people’s homes and offices.”
⦁ Vegetables are disliked by many, but your brand seems to have no trouble with veggies, how did you manage that?
“The huge popularity of the different products including the cold press juices which are mostly vegetable based shows that people will lap it up when taste meets health. The credit for the different fruit veg and the veg juice combinations go entirely to the founder whose creative juices flow all the time, literally and figuratively.”
⦁ How do you pick your flavours? Do you value nutrition more than taste or the other way round?
“The operating pin is health and nourishment. Taste and variety are important elements too. A closer look at the entire range will show that, practically all fruits and vegetables are covered, which means a subscriber over a period of time, reaps the benefits of all those fruits and vegetables in a steady manner.”
⦁ Whom do your client base mostly consist of?
“Our client base includes health and fitness enthusiasts, mothers looking at healthy options for their kids, office goers wanting to replace junk with a healthy option, diabetics, elite athletes and a lot of youngsters who are finding ways to look and feel healthy.”
⦁ What are your future plans for the company and brand?
“Having made our mark in Chennai, we are beginning operations in Bangalore by January, 2016. There are plans to expand to other cities as well, in the coming year.”
⦁ What’s the one health tip you would want to give the youngsters out there?
“Our one piece of advice to youngsters would be to focus on adding healthy alternatives to their diet apart from eliminating junk, in their pursuit of good health!”
