The wood was green as mosses of the Icy Glen the trees stood high and haughty, feeling their living sap the industrious earth beneath was as a weaver's loom with a gorgeous carpet on it, whereof the ground-vine tendrils formed the warp.

[dropcap style=”hexagon”]Q[/dropcap]These reflections just here are occasioned by the circumstance that after we were all seated at the table, and I was preparing to hear some good stories about whaling to my no small surprise, nearly every man. And not only that, but they looked embarrassed here were a set of sea-dogs many of whom without the slightest bashfulness had boarded great whales on the high seas entire strangers to them and duelled them dead without winking. They sat at a social breakfast table all of the same calling, all of kindred tastes looking round as sheepishly at each other as though they had never been out of sight of some sheepfold among the Green Mountains. A curious sight these bashful bears, these timid warrior whalemen the bar-room was now full of the boarders. They were nearly all whalemen chief mates and sea carpenters harpooneers and ship keepers a brown and brawny company with bosky beards.

This is the next one on my wish list!

Shaggy set, all wearing monkey jackets for morning gowns. Floating on the waves we saw the abandoned boat, as for one instant it tossed and gaped beneath the ship’s bows like a chip at the base of a cataract. The vast hull rolled over it, and it was seen no more till it came up weltering astern. Again we swam for it, were dashed against it by the seas, and were at last taken up and safely landed on board. Ere the squall came close to the other boats had cut loose from their fish and returned to the ship in good time. The ship had given us up, but was still cruising if haply it might light upon some token of our perishing an oar or a lance pole.

It looks really comfortable don’t you think?

They say that men who have seen the world, thereby become quite at ease in manner, quite self-possessed in company. Though Ledyard the great New England traveller and Mungo Park, the Scotch one of all men, they possessed the least assurance in the parlor. Perhaps the mere crossing of Siberia in a sledge drawn by dogs as Ledyard did, or the taking a long solitary walk on an empty stomach, in the negro heart of Africa, which was the sum of poor Mungo’s performances this kind of travel, I say, may not be the very best mode of attaining a high social polish.

In Short

For the most part that sort of thing is to be had anywhere. There are certain queer times and occasions in this strange mixed affair we call life when a man takes this whole universe for a vast practical joke, though the wit thereof he but dimly discerns, and more than suspects that the joke is at nobody’s expense but his own. However, nothing dispirits, and nothing seems worth while disputing. Peril of life and limb all these, and death itself seem to him only sly, good-natured hits and jolly punches in the side bestowed by the unseen and unaccountable old joker. That odd sort of wayward mood I am speaking of, comes over a man only in some time of extreme tribulation it comes in the very midst of his earnestness, so that what just before might have seemed to him a thing most momentous, now seems but a part of the general joke. There is nothing like the perils of whaling to breed this free and easy sort of genial, desperado philosophy and with it I now regarded this whole voyage of the Pequod, and the great White Whale its object.
