More often than not a second pint of beer ends up in a trip to the washroom. What is the process could be reversed and the pee could become beer again? Because all hail science, researchers over at the University of Ghent in Brussels, Belgium have devised a way of turning your urine into beer. Now that’s a sentence I never thought I’d say!
The team of scientists treats the urine unlike how wastewater is treated. This new process involves the use of a special membrane that is said to be energy-efficient and to be applicable in areas off the electricity grid, reports Reuters.
Here’s what happens: All the urine is collected in a tank and heated using a boiler powered by solar-energy. This is then passed through the aforementioned membrane. At this stage, elements like phosphorus, potassium and nitrogen are separated from water, which can further be used to brew the country’s much-loved beer.
The machine was recently put into action under the catch-phrase #peeforscience at a 10-day music and theatre festival in central Ghent, recovering 1,000 litres of water from the collected urine.
The project aims at setting up the machine on a larger scale in places like the airport. Moreover, it soughts put rural areas at ease where clean drinking water and fertilizers are sparse.
“We’re able to recover fertilizer and drinking water from urine using just a simple process and solar energy,” said University of Ghent researcher Sebastiaan Derese.
“We call it from sewer to brewer,” he added.
