The Hobbit Buttered Scones Recipe

on

Every great work of literature, we strongly believe, must have some scenes involving food – after all, pivotal plot points often happen at family dinners or parties. In true form, one of the world’s favourite fantasy classics; ‘The Hobbit’ begins with a party thrown by Bilbo Baggins. During it, Bilbo serves a range of foods including seed cakes, coffee, tea and buttered scones. Here’s a description of the feasting at the party:

“A big jug of coffee had been set in the hearth, the seed-cakes were gone, and the dwarves were starting on a round of buttered scones, when there came-a loud knock.”

We’ve already shared a recipe for seed cakes inspired by the Lord of The Rings, so today we’re going to focus on those buttered scones. Here’s a little background.

All About Scones

A scone is a single serving cake or quick bread, made with wheat, barley or oatmeal and often served with jam and clotted cream.

Scones are an especially popular snack and tea time treat in Britain.

Serve these scones with tea with a side of jam or light cream.
