Sheer Pira Recipe

on

Desserts are delicious, no matter which cuisine, country, region, continent, or culture they are from. And if you disagree then you’ve clearly been doing something wrong! One such dessert that falls in the comprehensively delicious category is a traditional Afghani sweet called ‘Sheer Pira’. It is a sweet nutty sweet that draws its droolworthy flavours from pistachios, green cardamom, rose water, and walnuts.

Sheer Piras look a lot like Indian barfis and are close to taste in til patti and chikki. That said, you still have to try this sweet to believe just how amazing it is! And given, that sheer pira is not easily available everywhere, why not make some at home? Follow the recipe below to make some this holiday season!

Instructions
  1. Powder walnuts and almonds in a food processor, and coarsely powder the pistachios separately.
  2. In a deep bowl, take milk powder, powdered walnuts, almonds, and cardamom and mix well.
  3. Take a plate and grease it generously with butter.
  4. In a steel wok, take water, add sugar and bring it to a boil. Keep stirring and let the syrup come to a rolling boil. Test it between the index finger and thumb for one string consistency.
  5. Turn off the heat. Add rose water and stir.
  6. Add milk powder, powdered nuts and cardamom. Stir to get a homogenous mixture.
  7. Empty the mixture into the greased plate and tilt it to spread the mixture uniformly.
  8. Dust with powdered pistachios and press with your hands so that pistachios set into the mixture.
  9. Cool in a dry place for 45-60 minutes.
  10. Cut square or diamond shapes with a sharp knife.
  11. Store in an air-tight container.
