Ingredients
Instructions
  1. Place slices in a large bowl with water.
  2. Saute butter with onion in a medium saucepan until onions are soft.
  3. Add pressed garlic and stir another 1 minute.
  4. Stir in heavy whipping cream and milk.
  5. Drain potatoes, place on paper towels and place half of them in a baking dish.
  6. Heat sauce to a simmer then pour over potatoes.
  7. Combine the salt and pepper and sprinkle half of the salt and pepper mixture on top of the potatoes.
  8. Sprinkle half cheese on top of the potatoes.
  9. Repeat with the the other half of the potatoes, salt and pepper and cheese.
  10. Pour the sauce over the potatoes and push the potatoes down into the cream.(They won’t be fully covered by cream).
  11. Cover dish with foil and bake for 1 hour.
  12. Then remove foil and bake for another 30-45 minutes until top is golden and bubbly and most of the liquid has been absorbed by the potatoes.
  13. Serve warm.
Recipe Notes

If the potatoes are browning too fast, tent dish with foil and continue baking. Potatoes should be easy to pierce with a fork when done.
