  1. Rinse both the rice and dal together for a couple of times in water.
  2. Heat the ghee or oil in a pressure cooker.
  3. Drop in the cumin seeds first, let them crackle and then add the turmeric powder and stir.
  4. Add the rice and moong dal and sauté for a minute.
  5. Add 4 to 4.5 cups water.
  6. Put in the salt.
  7. Stir and then pressure-cook the khichdi for 5-6 whistles till both the rice and moong dal have reached a porridge-like consistency.
  8. When the pressure settles down, open the lid and check the khichdi,
  9. if its too thick, then add some water and stir well.
  10. Let the cooker sit on a low flame to simmer the khichdi till you get the right consistency.
  11. Serve moong dal khichdi with a plain bowl of yogurt or raita.
Recipe Notes

For a richer taste, add 1-2 tsp of ghee while serving as well.
