Matilda Bruce Bogtrotter’s Chocolate Cake Recipe

Roald Dahl’s books are filled with fantastical characters and lots and lots of food. When you think of Roald Dahl’s food scenes, Charlie and the Chocolate factory immediately comes to mind, as does The BFG, in which The BFG eats snozzcumbers and drinks frobscottle. There’s also a scene from Matilada, the story about a girl with telekinesis which particularly stuck with us.

You know the one we’re talking about? Bruce Bogtrotter steals a slice of cake that’s reserved for Miss Trunchbull. As punishment, Miss Trunchball makes him eat an entire chocolate cake in front of his classmates.

Instructions
  1. Preheat and oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Melt the chocolate and add the butter.
  3. Stir until well combined.
  4. Stir in the sugar, flour and egg yolks.
  5. Whisk the egg whites until stiff and then mix into the chocolate.
  6. Pour the batter into a greased cake pan.
  7. Bake for 36 minutes.
  8. Take out of the oven and allow it to cool.
  9. While the cake cools, melt the chocolate for the frosting and mix with the cream.
  10. Smooth the frosting over the cake with a spatula.
