Mad Men Don Draper Old Fashioned Cocktail Recipe

We’re having some serious Mad Men withdrawal symptoms and feel the need for a viewing binge. Of course, that binge has to be paired with some booze to help us truly appreciate the witty copy phrases and vintage outfits. And – of course – when it comes to booze we have to steer towards Don Draper’s favourite drink – the Old Fashioned.

The Old Fashioned

The Old Fashioned is a classic cocktail made by mixing sugar, bitters, alcohol and a citrus rind.

In Mad Men, Don Draper can often be seen sipping an Old Fashioned – in one scene he even hops behind the bar to make one himself:

In this, Draper uses Old Overholt a classic American rye whiskey to make the cocktail. However you can use any rye whiskey of your preference; serve the drink in a short tumbler and garnish with an orange or lemon peel. Enjoy!

• 1 sugar cube
• 3 dashes Bitters
• Club Soda
• 2 ounces rye whiskey

Instructions

1. Put the sugar cube in the tumbler and add the bitters and a splash of soda.
2. Crush the sugar with the back of a spoon and stir.
3. Add an ice cube and pour the whiskey.
4. Stir once and garnish with citrus peel.
5. Enjoy.
