When Harry Met Sally Pastrami On Rye Sandwich Recipe

One of the most famous movie scenes with a sandwich is the scene in Katz’s Delicatessen in ‘When Harry Met Sally’, where Meg Ryan educates Billy Crystal on the ways of women. While Ryan’s sandwich doesn’t look like anything to write home about, we can’t help but drool at Crystal’s which he eats while he watches Ryan.

The scene is shot in Katz’s Delicatessen, a real restaurant in New York which was established in 1888.

The Famous Pastrami And Corned Beef Sandwich

The deli is well known for its sandwiches – it even ships out orders for the corned beef and pastrami. Here’s what it has to say about its unique meats:

“Corned beef and pastrami is cured using a slower method, which best flavors the meat, without injecting chemicals, water, or other additives to speed the process. Our finished product can take up to a full 30 days to cure, while commercially prepared corned beef is often pressure-injected (or “pumped”) to cure in 36 hours. Yep, you read that right. 30 days vs. 36 hours.”

Of course, we don’t have the luxury of being able to get meats that are cured for 30 days. However, with this recipe, you can make the next best thing; enjoy this sandwich for breakfast, lunch, a snack or dinner.

Instructions
  1. Spread one side of each of the slices of rye bread with butter.
  2. Melt a little butter on a griddle and toast the bread, butter side down on the griddle.
  3. Top each slice with a slice of cheese.
  4. Microwave the pastrami on high for a minute.
  5. Do the same with the corned beef.
  6. After the cheese melts, top one slice of bread with the pastrami followed by the corned beef.
  7. Place the sauerkraut on top of the other slice of bread, and flip it over to cover the slice with the pastrami and corned beef.
  8. Toast for two minutes.
  9. Take of the griddle, serve and enjoy.
