In American Gods, when dining in Wisconsin, Shadow has a pastry for the first time; Shadow … bit into it: it was warm and filled with meat, potatoes, carrots, onions. “’First pasty I’ve ever had,’ he said. ‘It’s real good.’” inspired by that, we’re sharing a recipe for a pastry packed with meat, potatoes and vegetables.

  1. Heat an oven to 350 degrees F.
  2. Mix the beef, potatoes, onions, salt and pepper to taste and carrots together.
  3. Mix together the flour and a teaspoon of salt.
  4. Cut in the butter until the mixture becomes coarse and mealy.
  5. Stir in 2/3 cups of ice water and work with your hands until a dough is formed.
  6. Shape the dough into 4 disks. Set aside for 10 minutes.
  7. Place the beef mixture onto the disks and gather together the discs edges and press together.
  8. Bake the pastries until golden brown – approximately 10 minutes.
