“Our Prime Minister is a dream to cook for” Says Chef Sanjeev Kapoor

On the last leg of his three-nation tour, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is currently in Oman, signing eight agreements including five MoUs that will in future benefit the two countries. And in addition to his work in the three countries, what’s also headlining social media is the food that was served to the PM. Especially during his stay in Abu Dhabi.

Celebrity chef Sanjeev Kapoor cooked for Modi and his host, the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, Mohamed bin Zayed. Expressing his sheer joy over the golden opportunity presented to him, Kapoor took to Instagram and shared a series of images with the Prime Minister and of all that he cooked during the trip. He captioned the image saying “Absolute honour & privilege to cook for our Hon. PM @narendramodi on invitation from Hon. Crowne Prince of UAE. My respect for both these great leaders grows more & more.”

In an interview for Gulf News, Kapoor stated that the PM likes to eat simple and wholesome food that also provided nourishment. “Our Prime Minister is a dream to cook for. He is not fussy and loves unpretentious food. They needn’t be fancy, so we concentrate on making it nutritious and healthy. He has such a busy schedule, so I made sure that he ate food that gives you energy,” he said.

“He believes in simple vegetarian food and is a believer that food is a great way to learn about each other’s countries and cultures…So there was a lot of food that fused elements from India and the UAE”, the Khana Khazana chef said, giving a little more insight on Modi’s eating habits.

So, what was on the menu for the PM and Crown Prince’s dinner at the palace in Abu Dhabi? Keeping in mind former’s simplicity and love for comfort food and the latter’s royal stature, Kapoor decided to go with “saffron rice infused with stock from different Indian spices, quinoa cake and a moong dal bhujia (dollop of cooked lentils) served on a metallic spoon as appetizers and a pumpkin pudding dessert”, reported Gulf News.

During their association in Abu Dhabi, Kapoor also learned took home a new recipe, courtesy the Indian leader. “We were talking about parathas and he told me about this paratha made with drum-sticks. It sounded very interesting and I told him that I am going try making it in my kitchen.” Well, it’s true what they say: it’s never too late to learn!
