At Petit Jardin You Could Get Red Carded And Sent Out Of The Restaurant For Using Your Phone

on

Our current addiction to social media means that it’s tough to get people off their phones when the gang gets together. However, over at Petit Jardin in Southern France, it looks like they’ve got the perfect solution to this problem. If you use your phone, you’ll get carded by the waiters, football style. Yellow for the first offence, red for the second, which would subsequently get you booted from the restaurant.

The owner Hean-Noël Fluery isn’t worried about losing those customers. “I don’t mind, I’d rather people like that eat in another restaurant – there are three in the village,” he told The Local.

Fluery argues that his methods herald the French tradition of talking with each other. His rules get people to talk to each other instead, and the whistling even encourages dialogue between tables and across the restaurant. Fluery wants that conversation level to extend to other restaurants as well. “People accept having to turn their phones off when they go to the cinema or the theatre so why not restaurants?”

So, if you’re ever vacationing in the South of France with a buddy who just won’t get off their phone, Petit Jardin is the place to take them. Or, if you can’t make it all the way there due to financial constraints, why not do it the old-fashioned way and put your phones in the centre of the table – first one to check, pays!
