on

A diet full of vegetables, fruits whole grains and lean proteins is great for your body. This has been said time and again by various studies and dietitians. But according to a recent study, most people are doing the wrong version of this diet.

The study was published by the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. The team of researchers analysed for over 20 years the eating habits of 200,000 health care workers. The focal point being that whether their diet and the risk of a coronary heart disease is linked or not.

The health workers, most of them, stuck to vegetarian diet. However, among them, the eating habits were quite different from each other and for some it was even unhealthier than the diets of non-vegetarians. The researchers found three types of diets amongst the vegetarian health workers: a healthy, plant based diet that includes whole grains, fruits, and vegetables; an unhealthy diet made up of refined carbohydrates like white bread and pasta; and mixed diet that falls in the middle of the first two.

The study concluded at the point that those who had the healthy, plant-based diet had the least possibility of developing a coronary heart disease. The unhealthy diet followers were more at risk. “Not all plant foods are necessarily beneficial for health,” said the researchers in their paper.

The key findings of the study shows that even though a vegetarian diet is a good option, falling back on refined foods can be unhealthy. There should be inclusion of lots of fruits and vegetables and the carbs should consist of brown rice, whole grain bread and the likes instead of bread and pasta for a wholesome diet.
