Are People Who Eat More Fast Food Susceptible To Asthma?

on

Last week, we discussed how eating processed meats like bacon and sausages can play a role in aggravating asthma attacks and symptoms. This week, we turn the focus to fast food; a recent study has suggest that individuals who eat more fast food are more susceptible to asthma.

The Study

The study, which was published looked at 125 healthy individuals and 125 people who suffered from asthma. They were assessed on their food habits using a questionnaire.

Through the answers, the researchers found that asthmatics were more likely to eat burgers, pizzas and other fast foods more than three times a week. They were also more likely to eat more of other junk food like potato chips, samosas and pakoras. ‘

“These food items are also known to lead to weight gain and obesity, which is a known risk factor for developing asthma,” said Dr Raj Kumar, one of the authors of the study.

“The change from traditional to modern diet means that we are now consuming more preserved food, salt, refined sugar and saturated fat and less of fruits, vegetables, milk and dietary fibres. This modification in diet and lifestyle could be the reason for rise in prevalence of asthma, apart from environmental factors,” he added.
