[dropcap]T[/dropcap]ake an instance from your everyday schedule. It’s nearing lunch time and you can’t wait till the clock strikes one to start gobbling down your lunch. If the food is not to your liking, then down the drain it goes. Food is an integral part of your life, right from breakfast in the morning to dinner late at night, food is a topic that keeps popping in your head.

When hunger strikes, babies wail, kids scream, teenagers lash out and once you’ve turned into an adult, you’re going to bring the roof down if you don’t get your food on time. But what about the poor?

They just bear it.

Blame the Government. Blame your rich next door neighbour, blame God if you must, but I shall not be blamed.

The RiceBucketChallenge is an initiative that was started in the City of Pearls, Hyderabad, and is a reroute of the popular IceBucketChallenge. The principle behind the IceBucketChallenge is heart-warming, but in India water is an expensive commodity and a privilege of sorts. The sentiments do not justify the wastage of buckets of water.

Manjulatha Kalanidhi, an Editor in the local Andhra Pradesh newspaper, The Hans India, has blown us away with her simple, thoughtful and ingenious solution to save the momentum of the challenge and still help the poor, hunger-stricken community.

To Do List

• Grab a bucket.

• Fill it to the brim with rice.

• DONATE IT.

RiceBucketChallenge

Charity begins with a bucket of rice. That can be approximately 14-15 kg of rice! So, who are the right people to donate this load of rice? Maid servants at home, servants in the office, dwellers in the slum, owners of street stalls, the list is endless.

Don’t just stop there. Click a picture and share it on Facebook, not because you need to portray yourself as some holy saint but because people can see an act of kindness and get inspired. This is social media we are talking about, you need to get out there and tag all your friends. Let’s give more meaning to that hashtag!
