Opinion: Is It Nuts To Offer Free Avocado Toast For A Year As Incentive For Buying A House?

You have to have been living under a rock if you haven’t heard about the avocado craze sweeping our planet. From avocado chocolate to people getting avocado hand (yes, that is a real thing), avocados are in the limelight. Recently, a real estate agency in Queensland, Australia, came up with an unusual way of attracting home buyers – free avocado toast for a year.

I see some you may be scratching your head in dismay wondering just how this would work. Well, here’s how: millennials these days absolutely adore their smashed avocado toast and some certainly can’t live without it. However, it is a tad bit costly at around $15 – $20 a pop (around Rs.950 to Rs. 1300) so a year’s worth of free avocado toast certainly sounds promising.

In fact, it does seem to be working as a couple houses have already been sold. However, shortly after this free avocado toast news became news there was a bit of a buff up over avocado toast when Tim Gurner (another Australian real estate mogul – fishy or what?) made some rather controversial comments.

Tim Gurner said, and I quote, “When I was trying to buy my first home, I wasn’t buying smashed avocado for $19 and four coffees at $4 each. We’re at a point now where the expectations of younger people are very, very high.” One has to wonder, is he really just trying to throw shade at the competition – also, he’s 35, that is younger people. However, that is another can of worms.

In my (expert, jk.) opinion, if you can afford a $500,000 house, as a ‘younger person’ then congratulations! You did it! Secondly, I’m sure you’ll agree that you didn’t make it solely because you swore off avocado toast and Starbucks. Third, you deserve that free weekly avocado toast, even though you can probably afford to pay for it. We all know that nothing tastes as good as free stuff does!
