Namma Ooru Bengaluru: Thom’s Bakery

on

Thom’s Bakery is pretty much an icon in ‘old Bangalore’ and it’s not hard to see why. First off, it’s not just a bakery, but a mad supermarket where you can pretty much find everything. I remember, in the days before online shopping, mum and I would traverse all the way there (from BTM Layout, quite a journey) just to get her baking supplies (I’ll be honest, I was there for the eclairs).

Drive past Thom’s Bakery in Frazer Town and you literally can’t miss the siren smell of freshly baked goods wafting towards you invitingly. Pretty much everything you get there is absolutely delicious (obviously, they’ve been around since the 70’s), but they’re most famous for their absolutely delectable plum cake.

Patrons travel from near and far to stock up on this plum cake. I’m usually not a big fan of the Christmassy goodie, but even I had to (grudgingly) admit that it was absolutely spot on. Almost as iconic as their sign (which used to be blue and white) is the friendly security guard with his signature handlebar moustache who is almost as old as the establishment.

On the off chance that you’ve made the trip all the way to Frazer Town, you absolutely cannot miss out on taking home some of their baked bread fresh out of the oven – you haven’t lived since you’ve had their bread! So, if you haven’t been you need to head there pronto – it’s the bakery of your dreams!
