Mumbai’s Misal Pav making waves in London

on

When you go to a new city, do you make a list of dishes to try out? Well, if you ever have made a list for Mumbai, then Misal Pav is surely on it.

The Foodies in London agreed as well and they decided the Misal Pav at Mumbai restaurant, Aaswad deserved an award for it. At the recent Global Foodie Hub Award held in London, Aaswad located at Shivaji Park in Dadar bagged the award for the ‘The World’s Tastiest Vegetarian Dish’. Mumbaikers and Misal Pav Lovers everywhere can take a minute to cheer!

Suryakant Sarjoshi, owner of Aaswad says, “We got the news and it feels great! Our misal won because the spices used for the curry are entirely homemade and the farsan is of good quality. As a dish, it is a whole meal in itself.”

For those of you who don’t know what Misal Pav is, it’s a spicy curry prepared with moth beans or matki (in Marathi) and served with chopped onions, tomatoes, fresh coriander and lime along with some green and tamarind chutneys. The highlight is the farsan, which adds crunch to the dish. And, the best way to enjoy a plate of misal is by wiping it off with Mumbai’s favourite bread that is pav.

The other competitors vying for the title were Vegan Spinach Pie (Athens), Baby Beans with Quail Egg (Barcelona), Black Barley (Perth) and Palmito Assado na Casca, a dish prepared with palm (Rio de Janeiro) among others.

We’ve been talking about Misal Pav for years now and it’s time the world listened, don’t you think? What other Indian dish would you nominate to win an award? Let us know in the comments! While you are at it, why don’t you try out Misal Pav Recipe.
