Mumbai’s Iconic American Express Bakery Just Got A Makeover

on

Any Mumbaikar who has even the faintest love for bread will know about the American Express Bakery. Nestled off Hill Road in Bandra, the bakery has a 100 year old history in Mumbai. Now, the iconic bakery has been at the receiving end of a makeover; patrons and wanderers down Hill Road have reported it’s sporting a completely new look.

The Background

The American Express Bakery traces its history back to almost 100 years when Goan immigrant, Joseph Carvalho established a bakery in Byculla. It quickly became popular with the city’s swish set for its freshly baked breads, cakes and other confectionaries like marzipans, chocolate muffins and cinnamon rolls.

Today, the bakery is owned by Joseph’s descendants and is still immensely popular for its breads and cakes.

The Facelift

People passing the bakery on Hill Road will now notice a beaming man holding a basket of freshly baked goods, enticing them to step into the bakery. The bakery itself is now done up in a cheery red colour – perfect for the season – and offers patrons more room to explore.

“The wall art goes with the vibe of the suburb. The last time we changed the interiors was back in 2003. The shop needed a fresher look. So, two months back, we decided to go for a layout change,” said Emil Carvalho, one of the bakery’s owners to Mid-Day.

The Menu

Breads

The bakery still serves its popular signature items including breads, pattices and rolls. A few months ago, they expanded the menu to include Caramelised Onion Lavash, While Wheat Sandwiches with Meat Loaf and Garlic Roast chicken Crostini.

For the Christmas season, they’ll introduce apple pies, strawberry frangipane almond tart, dundee cakes, chocolate hazelnut babka and traditional fruit mince pies.

The Christmas specials will be available from mid-December onwards; not long to go!
