Mario Batali’s Tone Deaf Apology Causes More Harm Than Good

on

That Mario Batali is plunged neck-deep in a roster of sexual harassment allegations by four different women has become common knowledge. The chef even lost his position at ABC’s show The Chew following the same. And as if things weren’t bad enough, Batali has floated out a public apology as well. Now, I know what you’re thinking. Public apology is good damage control, right? Except that this particular one is not.

Cringe, Cringe & More Cringe!

Batali posted a short apology letter online. “As many of you know, this week there has been some news coverage about some of my past behavior,” Batali wrote on Friday. “I have made many mistakes and I am so very sorry that I have disappointed my friends, my family, my fans and my team. My behavior was wrong and there are no excuses. I take full responsibility.”

“Sharing the joys of Italian food, tradition and hospitality with all of you, each week, is an honor and privilege. Without the support of all of you — my fans — I would never have a forum in which to expound on this. I will work every day to regain your respect and trust,” he wrote, signing off.

Pretty neat, eh? Except that there was a post script that read: “In case you’re searching for a holiday-inspired breakfast, these Pizza Dough Cinnamon Rolls are a fan favorite.” A picture and link to the recipe also followed this blasphemous footnote.

*Cringes harder than physically possible*

Needless to say, this sneaky digital marketing gimmick did not go down well with the Twitterverse. Here’s what some of them had to say.

And there were many more. Because you don’t simply say “I’m sorry, here’s a holiday recipe to make things better” after being accused of sexual harassment! Just NO.

Was this an unintended mistake (however in the world THAT is possible) or was it a planned move, we don’t know. But here’s to hoping that Mario Batali is blessed with better sensibilities and apologizing skills in the New Year. Amen.
