on

World Food India 2017 will be kicked off in the Capital this weekend. The event will showcase the best of Indian and world cuisine with an extensive exhibition of latest food tech and more. A major attraction at the event will be the ‘Food Street’, which will feature a number of ace chefs and food stalls. This spotlight will now be shared in part with khichdi. Yes, the popular homemade Indian food made with rice, lentils, and spices.

Brand Indian Cuisine

To amp up the mega food event, food Processing Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal proposed the idea of branding khichdi as a “super food”.

During the second day of the mega food event in Delhi – November 4 – khichdi, will be crowned the brand India cuisine. “Khichdi has been selected as it is one of most commonly consumed food item in India, by the rich and poor alike, across the length and breadth of this country,” said an official close to the development.

In an attempt to make an entry in the Guinness World Records, 800 kg of this special khichdi will be made with various grains such as jowar and bajra. Vice-President Venkaiah Naidu is to launch the mega khichdi in a big kadhai (vessel). The khichdi would be distributed to poor children through the Akshaya Patra Foundation, reports Business Standard.

Further, the ministry will promote the food as India’s “international food”. In order to do so, the khichdi will be packed in specially designed packets and sent to all embassies and consulates so that the dish can be popularized as a traditional Indian delicacy. The ministry also plans on roping in various restaurant chains globally to propagate the Indian food.

Chef Sanjeev Kapoor, who has been named the face of World Food India’s Food Street, will also showcase a number of khichdi variants.
