Put the breads aside and grab yourself a plantain sandwich. The jibarito sandwich is a filling that typically includes meat, cheese, lettuce and tomato, glazed with garlic-flavoured mayonnaise slapped between flattened fried green plantains in place of bread. Introduced to LA by a Puerto Rican restaurant in the Humboldt Park neighbourhood, in 1996, the Jibarito sandwich is here to stay. There are so many things that could go wrong with this sandwich. When done right, the crispy and sweet plantains highlights the flavour of meat but when done wrong, well, prepare for a messy disaster.
