India Will Be One Of The Top Contributors Of Global Whisky Growth In The Next 5 Years

on

A recent finding by the International Wine and Spirits Research (IWSR) says that Indian whiskies and scotch will be among the top contributors globally to the whisky market in the coming five years. According to these findings, whisky, gin, tequila, Chinese rice wine (baijiu) are the ones that will contribute the most to the global total spirits market.

The forecast says that the total spirits market will be at about 3.19 billion cases by 2021. This including the gain made by whiskey, gin and tequila between 2017 and 2021 of about 55.2 million, 7.1 million and 5.8 million of 9 litre cases respectively. A large contribution of global whisky market will be due to consumption of whisky and scotch in India which stands as the biggest growth contributor in the global spirit category.

Scotch is expected to add 10.5 million cases to the worldwide whisky growth and others being mainly Indian will contribute 28.2 million cases according to IWSR. There were in fact, three whiskies from India that made it to IWSR’s 2016 global top 10 spirits brands by volume sales which was published in July. These were, Officer’s Choice (second most consumed and selling 32.32 million cases), McDowell’s (sixth most consumed and selling 25.63 million cases) and Imperial Blue (tenth most consumed and selling 18.01 million cases).

Speaking of wine and beer, these are going to gain in the overall alcohol market in terms of volume in the coming five years according to a statement by the IWSR given on Tuesday. The statement also said that biggest growth for beer is being expected from Mexico, India and Vietnam.

On the contrary, the US which is the second-largest contributor to the global whisky market and many other spirits is predicted to go down by 37 million cases in the coming five years according to the IWSR. Even the growth in whisky, wine and tequila might not be enough for the US to neutralize the loss in beer, cider and mixed drinks.
