Eating a perfectly ripe avocado is certainly the stuff of dreams. From mashing and slathering it on toast to eating guacamole with your chips, this certainly is a versatile addition to just about any type of dish. Even Oprah has become a fan of this fruit.

Unfortunately, this tropical fruit is quite seasonal, which means you can only get your hands on this for a limited time throughout the year. Fans of this staple do not want to know life without avocado, which is why many people have taken to freezing this fruit and keeping it fresh when they need it.

While freezing this fruit may seem counterintuitive, this can give you access to this whenever you need it. If you are interested in learning how to freeze avocado, take a look at our nifty guide below.

Why Freeze Avocado?

One of the reasons why you should definitely freeze avocado is that you can easily have these on hand for whatever recipe or meal you want to have for that day. This is all about convenience.

Rather than go out and buy a new one every single time, you can simply get your stash from the freezer. Besides this, you can preserve its ripe, fresh state for later. Thankfully, frozen avocados can still be used for a variety of things

With this trick, you can take the guessing game out on whether or not your avo is already ripe, not ripe, or worse, overripe. Popping this in the freezer allows it to stay fresher for longer.

They can be used for guacamole, for avocado toast, ice cream, or even better, for making shakes and smoothies of all kinds. Since it is already cold, you can easily throw these in the blender and make a refreshing drink to cool you down.

Learn How to Freeze Avocado

Freezing the Whole Avocado

  1. One of the ways you can try is freezing the entire fruit. To do this, wash and dry the avocado.
  2. Wrap the fruit tightly with Saran wrap or cling wrap, taking care that no part of the fruit is exposed.
  3. Place the fruit inside a freezer bag and seal it. Take out the air and place it in the freezer.

Freezing Halves or Quarters

  1. Wash the avocado, skin and all.
  2. Cut the avocado in half, taking care not to remove the pit.
  3. Brush or squeeze a bit of lemon juice on these avocado halves. These will prevent avocados from browning.
  4. Cover this tightly with a plastic wrap, carefully going over the ridges and the center so that the plastic wrap covers even space where the seed originally was.
  5. Place in a zip-tight freezer bag. Press out all the air out and place it in the freezer.

Freezing Mashed Avocado

Freezing avocado in its mashed or pureed state is perhaps the best option you can come across. Apart from its accessibility, this can also be used for all types of recipes.

Plus, it can retain texture better, with just a little mix here and there to get it going again.

  1. Wash the avocado. Peel it and remove the seed.
  2. Mash or puree this with the help of a fork, a masher, or even a blender or food processor. Add some lemon juice to the mixture to prevent it from turning brown.
  3. Place the mixture in a resealable freezer bag and press until you get an even layer. Take the time to squeeze all the air out as possible and place it in the freezer.

The Bottom Line

Now that you know how to freeze avocado, you can now save these ripe fruits whenever you need to. These will surely come in handy when you’re hankering for a quick creamy, buttery avocado snack anytime.
