Hot Tea Might Be A Possible Prevention For Glaucoma Says Study

on

Not hot coffee or iced tea but a hot cup of tea can lower the risk of glaucoma as found by a recent study published in the British Journal of Ophthalmology. Glaucoma is an eye condition which damages the optic nerve which can cause blindness. According to Science Daily, it affects 57.5 million people currently.

The Research

The researchers dug into the data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) in the US between 2005 and 2006. The data collected from 1678 participants who had complete data of their eye examinations showed that only 5% of them had glaucoma. On further analysis through questionnaires it was found that those who consumed hot tea on a daily basis had a lower risk of developing the condition as compared to the ones who didn’t.

Since this is an observational study, one can’t be a 100 percent sure. “Further research is needed to establish the importance of these findings and whether hot tea consumption may play a role in the prevention of glaucoma,” said the researchers. But hey, benefits of tea are not just restricted to glaucoma prevention.
