Here’s How Much An Innocent Sandwich Effects The Environment

on

According to the experts at the University of Manchester, a sandwich, which is a common daily meal for millions is causing a major impact on the environment. The study analysed both homemade and packaged sandwiches right from production of ingredients, packaging and food wastage to reach at a conclusion.

The Carbon Footprint Of A Sandwich

The team not only analysed the making of the sandwich from scratch but also took various varieties in their research. The highest carbon footprint was found in sandwiches that contained pork meat which includes sausages, bacon and ham plus in those which had cheese and prawns. The sandwich with the most impact on the environment was the one which is a packaged ‘all day breakfast’ sandwich containing egg, bacon and sausage.

The researchers found that this particular sandwich is responsible for 1441 grams of carbon dioxide in the environment. This, they say is the same as driving a car for the distance of 12 miles. The lowest impact was of a simple homemade sandwich with cheese and ham. Plus, making sandwiches at home said the experts could slash the environmental impact into half.
