Pepper is known for enhancing aroma and spice in our daily Indian food fare but who knew that the spice helps contribute to weight loss. Experts Shilpa Arora and Dr. Simran Saini spoke to NDTV and talked about how this amazing spice helps induce weight loss.

“Spicy food can help in better metabolizing of food, due to the thermogenic effect,” said Dr. Simran Saini from Fortis Hospital in New Delhi to NDTV. “The thermogenic effect or thermic effect of food (TEF) or also known as dietary induced thermogenesis (DIT) refers to the increase in metabolic rate or the rate at which your body burns calories that occurs after ingestion of food. This thermogenic effect is believed to play a role in burning calories, fighting fat and weight loss. Eating spicy food also increases satiety, making you feel full while eating less.”
The superfood pepper which is packed with nutrients like calcium, potassium and sodium and vitamins like A,K and C is also rich in healthy fats and dietary fibers says the report and these also help in weight loss. “Black pepper contains piperine, a compound that enhances metabolic performance and suppresses fat accumulation in the body,” says Shilpa Arora, Macrobiotic Nutritionist and Health Practitioner told NDTV. “Black pepper tea works very well in managing obesity. Black pepper also helps in the absorption of nutrients in the body. It helps strengthen immunity and fights against infections too,” she added.
