Grub Shub Is Giving A Desi Twist To Waffles And We Love It

on

Creativity, especially when it comes to food has absolutely no limits. One such example is Grub Shub at Matunga East as the owners playfully experimented by putting some dosa batter into a waffle maker at home and of course after many improvements, have come up with a lip-smacking twist. Once you’ve tasted the desi waffles at this place, it’ll change your perspective about waffles completely. In a good way of course!

Desi Waffles At Grub Shub

We absolutely loved their waffle dosas which were served with splendid chutneys – tomato, beetroot and coriander. The batter for the waffles and the chutneys are all made in house and we were told that the batter took many trials. The result is that you get a crisp waffle which tastes exactly like a dosa or an uttapam, depending on what you order. We tried their Madras Masala Waffle Dosa and The Grub Shub Uttapam and both were topped with ghee and podi. The masala waffle had the lovely potato masala between two waffles and was absolutely amazing. Our favourite though was the uttapam waffle which we thought was on-the-go kind of dish as well as good for light, tasty snacking.

Next we tried their range of Chatpata Waffles. While experimenting with the savoury waffle concept, Grub Shub owners haven’t restricted to only the dosa waffles. They’ve also ventured into a variety of popular dishes like chaat, mezze platter and creamy mushrooms and used those to make innovative waffles. The result again has paid off as right from their Delhi Style Waffle Chaat to The Mezze Waffle, it all works amazingly well. Hummus is spread on the Mezze Waffle and then topped with falafel, roasted tomato dip and feta. High on flavour, everything in the waffle, right from the delicious falafel to the in-house tomato dip works together and makes for a sumptuous treat.

We thoroughly enjoyed their chaat waffle as well which had chunks of potato, chickpeas and the lovely flavours of a typical street-side chaat. This waffle is a must try especially when you’re bored to death with the same old chaats. Last but not the least, their chipotle mushroom waffle too was a big win. The chipotle sauce too is made in house, is absolutely lip smacking and makes the waffle oh so good. A must try!

Desi Fries & Mac N Cheese

Grub Shub has shown great innovation and flavour with their desi waffles but that’s not the only thing they’ve turned desi. They’ve got three kinds of mac n cheese – Classico, Angry Albert Pinto and Sriracha Cottage Cheese. We tried the most desi one which is the Angry Albert Pinto. Mac N Cheese is topped with spicy Goan mushroom balchao that’s gives it an outstanding, fiery flavour. We admit that we were quite full after all those waffles but we just couldn’t stop binging on this spectacular mac n cheese!

Next desi thing on the menu are fries. We tried the Chipotle Tex Mex Fries, Imly Chilli BBQ Fries and Cheesy Makhani Fries. The makhani fries were topped with a smoky North Indian-style makhani gravy which we’ve all come to love. The fries taste simply splendid and we loved the gravy on top. Their chipotle fries and imli fries were equally good. The smoky chipotle and the tangy tamarind sauce on top of the crispy fries worked really well and we can never look at fries the same way again.

Wash It Down With These

It’s an absolute must that you order coolers or shakes or floats with the food here at Grub Shub. Yes, to wash down the food but also because they taste oh-so-good. If you want a drink to keep your palate clean then go for the zingy Tamarind & Soda Cooler. Their strawberry shake is refreshing and full of flavour.

Amongst their shakes we also enjoyed drinking the Key Lime Pie Shake which due to its minty flavour was again really tasty and innovative. You can also go for their Thandai float which is really refreshing as well. All their drinks are awesome with regards to flavour and you merely need to pick one of your liking.

The Dessert Waffle

Completely satiated we made it to the dessert part of the meal which again of course was a waffle. Though Grub Shub will be etched in history for making great savoury waffles, they do have a range of Sweet Belgian Waffles too. Do they win here as well? We say, hands down! Their Black Forest Waffle is the one we tried and we loved it. The waffle game at this place on point and breaks all barriers of the conventional ones. If you’re in the city and are looking for something different yet something desi, head to Grub Shub. It’s our promise that you won’t be disappointed.
