A few months ago, a video surfaced of celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay getting a taste of his own medicine. This was when the chef decided to serve monks at a Thai monastery with some of his Pad Thai noodles, which according to a Thai expert chef wasn’t very good. And even though the monks liked Ramsay’s noodles, for a moment we took the Thai gourmand’s word because, well, it was his native cuisine. That was one incident but now the Kitchen Nightmares host is taking on a show where a part of the schedule will have him competing with local chefs to make their regional cuisine.
About The Show
Christened Gordon Ramsay: Uncharted, the show will follow the chef around the world, as he learns about “high-octane” traditions that are local to different regions. At the end of each episode, Ramsay’s learnings will then be put to test against locals. He will be seen “pitting his own interpretations of regional dishes against the tried-and-true classics”, read a report.
A lot of people are not very comfortable with the idea as they feel it’s a tad inappropriate. Meanwhile, some are even comparing it to Anthony Bourdain’s Parts Unknown, which was also a show that featured the host traveling across the world unearthing new and interesting facts about the more unknown regions.
Citing an official press release, American chef Eddie Huang tweeted his displeasure with the concept, saying: “the last thing the food world needs right now is Gordon Ramsay going to foreign countries showing “’locals he can cook their cuisines better than they can’”.

It’s true, Ramsay can spew unwarranted amounts of verbal acid but we’ve seen him interact with local chefs before and the encounter wasn’t half as fierce as the ones he has with contestants on his show. And as for the competition, let’s not forget the smug satisfaction most of us got when Ramsay’s pad Thai noodles failed to impress the local chef. All said and done, the show sounds like a good mix of entertainment and knowledge and that combination never hurt anyone!
Though a date is yet to be announced, the show, which will be produced by National Geographic Studios, will be aired in 2019.
