Did Goa Just Get A Green Light On Importing Beef From Karnataka?

Following the recent beef ban in parts of India, there has been quite an on-going debate on whether all states should adhere to the ban because not all every states’ sentiments are linked with cow slaughter. For example, the open protests held in Meghalaya and Kerala wherein people and leaders came together to tell the government that they – as a majority – were perfectly okay with consuming beef. These states are in fact on the verge of facing a beef shortage due to the ban on cow slaughter.

Another Indian state that is absolutely okay with cow slaughter and beef consumption is Goa. And recently during an assembly, Goa’s Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar revealed that they were looking to import beef from their neighbouring state, Karnataka, to avoid beef shortage.

Parrikar told the Goa assembly: “We have not closed the option to stop getting meat from Belgaum (in Karnataka) to ensure that there is no shortage.”

The CM said that about 2,000kg of beef was slaughtered everyday at the state’s only legal abattoir, the Goa Meat Complex, at Ponda, adding that Karnataka met the remaining demand for beef. “The government does not have any intention to restrict bringing animals for slaughter at the Goa Meat Complex from the neighbouring state.”

Answering a question by BJP MLA Nilesh Cabral, Parrikar said “I can assure you that inspection of beef from the neighbouring state will be done by a proper and authorised medical doctor, and not others”.
