Madurai-based Chef Ram Prakash attempted to set a new Guinness World Record by making 2089 dishes in 50 hours in an event he called the Longest Solo Cooking Marathon. In 2015, Chef M.S. Rajamohan had set the record by making 1204 dishes in 48 hours and Chef Prakash broke that record with his marathon.

Some of the dishes that he made were Vallarai Keerai Nei Soru, Kaatuthulasi Kaalan Vadai, Semparuthi Pazha Dosa, Sukku Vendaya Keerai Halwa, Vethalai Milagu Sadham and so much more, which were also on the list for the world record set by Chef Rajamohan. As per the rules, Chef Prakash was allowed a 4-hour break in the middle of his cooking marathon, which he did take, but was still able to complete all the dishes that he’d set out to do.

“It was an outcome of two years of planning and research on ancient Tamil recipes. The main aim of the event is to promote Sangakala Tamil Unavu,” says Chef Prakash who dedicated the whole marathon to his mentor and guru Chef Jacob Sahaya Kumar Aruni. Speaking about his mentor, Prakash said, “It was he who inspired and motivated me to research on forgotten recipes. We cooked food without sugar, artificial colours, maida and refined oil.”

Prakash had a dedicated that worked with him to achieve this feat, putting their all into helping him achieve this one goal, “It was a challenging task as we had to brave the weather and frequent power cuts. Surveillance camera failed once and the time lost had to be compensated,” he told The Hindu. That’s not all he did. Whenever the food was ready, it was distributed to the homeless through Madurai Virundhu, a non-profit organisation in the city.

Every dish was logged and photographed by the jury from the Unique World Records and they plan to send the documents to Guinness World Records and Limca Book of Records. Right now, Chef Prakash holds the record for “Longest Solo Cooking Marathon” from the Unique World Records!
