Food Stalls At Mumbai’s Popular Beaches Get A Clean Tag By The FDA

Juhu Chowpatty and Girgaum Chowpatty are two popular, family hang out style beaches of Mumbai that have plenty of street food stalls. These stalls serve up the popular dishes like Pav Bhaji, Pani Puri, Ice-Gola, etc which at times people can get skeptical about eating. This is due to hygiene but a recent update by the Times of India says that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of Maharashtra has given a clean tag to these stalls. The report also says that post the street food near Kankaria Lake in Ahmedabad, Mumbai is the second city to get this clean stamp.

Food Safety Act

The FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India) has been observing the 80 food stalls at Juhu Chowpatty and 30 at the Girgaum Chowpatty for cleanliness for the last six months. “The tag is a seal of assurance that the food has been cooked in clean condition, following standard hygiene practices, and is absolutely safe to eat,” Pallavi Darade, the commissioner of FDA said in a statement reports the Times of India. Further, Shailesh Adhav, the joint commissioner of the FDA said that the vendors of these street food stalls were trained to follow hygienic food practices.

“The FDA also helped them refurbish their stalls, light them up properly and select raw material,” Mr. Adhav said in a statement. He also added that the stall owners were also made to get medical certificates for their staff members. The street food vendors were made aware of the Food Safety Act as well as the penalties if a violation was observed said Adhav.
