Food porn gets chatty: A look at Pinterest’s new messaging feature

[dropcap]A[/dropcap] picture says a thousand words.

And Pinterest used to be content with this metaphor; Are you enamoured with this beautiful picture? Well, then, you have three options – pin it, send it or add it to your Wishlist.

And with such amazing shots of food on Pinterest, no less than two million pins are sent each day.

Pinterest: You have a new message

Pinterest’s new messaging feature, Conversations, lets you have a ‘good old fashioned conversation’ about the pins that you share. Unlike popular Social Media websites like Facebook, WhatsApp, Hike Messenger and so on, you can’t converse on any random, off-topic discussion.

“”It’s more of a conversation around an object than just a quick hello.” Pinterest

Conversations gives more meaning to the pictures that are shared as you can reply with a private message or send a Pin back. The highlight of this feature allows you to send pins and messages to multiple people simultaneously, making it easier to communicate with a large group.

Have a group of 10 people? Group chat it is.

Food and drinks are the top pinned categories, and commenting on the pictures, expressing thoughts about food, or sharing new ideas, the site is more accommodating to the needs of the users. You can also create a grocery shopping list with this messaging feature.

Directing the interest back to the Pins

The notable point about these messages is the fact that any action performed with a Pin in the main site can also be accomplished within this message. You can send a Pin, add a Pin to you Wishlist, Pin a picture to your own board, send a board and even send a user profile via Pinterest’s messages.

“It’s not meant to take over the entire Pinterest experience. It’s a way to enhance and close the loop on the (send-a-pin) feature.” Watson says, Pinterest.

The message pops up to the left of the feed, with a circle accenting your friend’s face. Non-Pinterest users will be more tempted to check the site out after they’ve received a link in their message.

Pinterest has widened its social platform with this feature as it opens new spots for marketing and buying/selling. It may have been only a three-month testing in Portland, but this upgrade is already available on Android, iOS and the web.

Send a message to tell us your views about this feature. We’ll Pin it.
