Doritos Gets An All-Black Halloween Makeover In Japan

on

Come October and everybody – and more importantly every food label – is painted in shades of Pumpkin Spice and other Halloween clichés. And all of us know how Japan is anything but clichéd! (The wasabi flavoured Kit-Kat would like to vouch for that.) And living up to the country’s crazy twists, Doritos Japan gives the corn chips a spooky makeover this fall.

Behold, the new Black Garlic Pepper Doritos! As the name suggests, the iconic tortilla chips will be disturbingly black (not that we have a problem with noir edibles) and dusted with garlic and pepper packed in a suave black spook-themed package.

Oh and why garlic pepper, you ask? Well, you clearly haven’t seen enough vampire movies (no, not that one). Garlic in popular folklore is known to ward off vampires (the real non-glittery ones). Hence. Basically, the new flavour is just what you should be serving at your Halloween party. Because, not only is it an absolutely delish snack, but can also double up as a weapon to scare off probable bloodsucking monsters. You know, just in case. It is Halloween after all!

This isn’t the first time the Japanese market will be seeing black food. Not too long ago the country was the first to harbour the concept of the pitch black burger. Also, the black ninja dogs from IKEA, the black anchovy paste bun Ghostbusters burgers, as well as the “Pitch Black” Studio Ghibli cheeseburgers have been big in their snack market. And only last year, Burger King had launched a black colored Halloween Whopper. Damn, Japanese fast food is really big on the cosplay!

The new Doritos flavour will – unfortunately – be available only in Japan. Folks in Japan can lay their hands on the Halloween Doritos throughout the month of October at select stores.
