Delhi’s Town Hall Is Up For Restoration, Will Get A Food Court & More!

on

Among that many things that Chandni Chowk prides itself with, the Capital’s Town Hall is one of them (yes, it has one). The Victorian-era structure, which has stood strong for a decade and a half, is headed towards a restructuring with the New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) at its helm. The authority is planning to float out the tender for the same soon.

“The process has already begun. We have prepared the RFP (Request For Proposal) for the project for inviting bids from consultants and the tender for selecting the consultant should be out by next week,” a senior official of the NDMC told PTI.

Post redevelopment, the vintage construction might house a lot of new facilities, installations, and the works – this will include things like a craft baazar, a dancing fountain, a maze, light and sound programmes, street food, children activity area, a boutique hotel, food court, courtyard and sculpture garden, digital library, lecture rooms, fine dining areas, reports NDTV.

“An in-principle approval has been accorded for the PPP project,” she said. North Delhi Municipal Commissioner Praveen Gupta said the restoration was initially planned to be funded by the Union Tourism Ministry but “could not be materialised on that front” so this new plan has been envisioned.

The Town Hall, a fine work of architecture in its British Raj days, now stands abandoned for years, so a restoration is just what it needs. A massive sum of INR 50 crore had been cleared by the NDMC back in 2014.

A source close to the development said that if all goes well, the fresh project would be taken up in the “next nine months and is likely to be completed within two years”, leaving the Capital with a gorgeous renewed structure to pride itself with.

So gear up to kick back with some amazing food and an amazing time at this vintage hangout spot.
