Before you go absolute ballistic, the incident happened some time back and Teigen and Legend are healed and healthy right now.
Chrissy Teigen has been hard at work in the kitchen, with her cookbook Cravings grabbing the #1 spot at the New York Times’ Bestsellers list, her sequel to the same con be nothing short of equally awesome. And given her literary-culinary success, one would assume that the 31-year-old is a genius in the kitchen and knows her way with the knives and spatulas. Well, that is not entirely how things are.
“Aside from small kitchen fires usually brought on by the combo of a flame broiler and my love of oil,” she says, “there’s one kitchen disaster that really sticks out.”
It all started on a game night when Teigen and Legend had a few friends over to watch football at their house. The couple decided to whip up Teigen’s favourite scalloped potatoes to their guests. Now, for those who don’t know, scalloped potatoes are made with really thinly sliced potatoes, and no one wants to miss a penalty to get the slices right! So Teigen pulled out her recently purchased mandolin, which is an uber easy and neat alternative to slicing food with a knife.

“I gave John the task, and within the first three swipes, he cut the tip of his finger clean off,” Teigen says. “He refused medical attention because of whatever was happening at that point in the game, so I told him to go sit and let me ‘show him how it’s done.’ First swipe—first!—I sliced off the exact same finger tip. We have a great photo of us both at the urgent care center.”
That is one way of learning the lesson because Teigen now swears by her heavy-duty Kevlar gloves whenever she uses the mandoline. Good to know that the disaster hasn’t wavered the couple’s love for scalloped potatoes, which according to Chrissy is a must on every holiday and special occasion, be it game day or Christmas dinner.
Meanwhile, here’s John Legend using a far less monstrous kitchen instrument.
