The holy month of Ramadan, the ninth month of the Muslim year, during which strict fasting is observed from dawn to dusk began this year on May 17th. Ramadan is a time that is very much connected with a myriad variety of food prepared throughout the month that is eaten before sunrise and after sunset. In accordance with the festive season, Madras Mela has organized Ramadan Food Street – Iftar 2018, a food fest that celebrates authentic Ramadan cuisine, at Khadar Nawaz Khan Road, Nungambakkam.

“We wanted to bring the entirety of Iftar cuisine under one roof for Chennaiites instead of them having to go in search of places that serve a good Haleem or ‘Nombu Kanji,” says Zulaiha, one of the organizers of the event. She, along with her friend, Femina, have ventured into the food fest arena for the first time. “The idea came to us just 20 days back and we put it together the best we could. We have been part of various clothes exhibitions in the past and wanted to try something different and this was it,” added Zulaiha.

The event was inaugurated by popular music director Yuvan Shankar Raja last Thursday who spoke about the need for such Ramadan themed initiatives especially for office-goers who want to have authentic Iftar dishes to break their fast.

The event currently has over 15 – 16 stalls that serve a variety of dishes, including the mandatory Iftar nombu kanji, biriyani, Haleem, etc. They also have a bakery stall that dishes out desserts for the crowd and a sugarcane juice stall that sells organic sugarcane that is prepared in the most refined manner. Their juice stall that sells blends of tender coconut, ice apple, and nannari is one of their highlights. You can also get authentic Kerala dishes and 40 different varieties of kulfis at Ramadan Food Street – Iftar 2018.

Ramadan Food Street – Iftar 2018 is happening until the 15th of June, from 12 pm to 12 am, at No. 16/28, Khader Nawaz Khan Road, Nungambakkam (Opp. Buva House), Chennai. Entry free.
