on

According to a report by the Hindustan Times, Central Railway in Mumbai has taken a decision to replace the plastic cutlery and food containers ahead of the plastic ban in Maharashtra. The decision was reportedly taken in a high level meeting on Friday that included Senior Central Railway Officers, railway catering staff, Indian Railway Catering Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) officials and railway station stall owners and here was when the railways decided to stop buying plastic.

No More Pantry Food In Plastic Boxes

“We have asked all stall owners and catering officials to stop getting plastic products. They need to finish the existing stock. We will gradually introduce paper plates, cups and cardboard boxes,” said a senior Central Railway official to the Hindustan Times. The pantry food in trains as well as that sold on the stalls at the stations’ are sold in plastic packets and containers.

The report further says that to look at plastic alternatives, another meeting will be held on 10th May. “We have asked companies, manufacturers of paper products and cardboard boxes to attend the meet. Stall vendors and IRCTC officials, too, will be there. CR is likely to take a call on plastic cutlery served to passengers. The railways plan to come up with a dos and don’ts manual,” said the official to the Hindustan Times.
