Budweiser Is Exploring Ways To Make Brewing Beer On Mars Possible

It’s clearly not as exciting, anymore, to brew beer right here on earth. And with the discovery of seven new planets, it’s obvious that we need to get out and try something new. And because of that, Budweiser is going to Mars to produce their brew somewhere different.

At a South By Southwest (SXSW) panel this past weekend, Budweiser VP Ricardo Marques and marketing innovation VP Val Toothman went into great detail to explain their big plans for the future and brewing beer on the Red Planet. It’s not going to be a simple task and it’s not a decision made without a lot of planning because they still need to develop the equipment and also properly understand the method before executing.

As you’d expect, the biggest challenge that the brewers will face is the lack of gravity. “When you’re in a zero-gravity environment, a beverage with carbonation is going to be an issue,” retired astronaut Clayton Anderson explained. But obviously, Budweiser is researching the different ways to work with the microgravity environment to develop the right kind of beer that can be consumed while on the planet.

Not too long ago, researchers said that it would be possible to grow barley and hops on Mars. Plus, scientists have also been able to capture the carbon dioxide and purify it which could also be a method in which making carbonated alcohol beverages can be developed on the Red Planet. At this stage, there isn’t a lot of information or specifics as Budweiser is still in the process of figuring everything out. The team is hoping to have this technology ready in the next decade or two.

“When we can enjoy a few ice-cold Buds on the Red Planet, that will be the moment when we can truly realize our dreams of space colonization,” added Ricardo Marques.
