American College of Cardiology has conducted the largest study till now to find a link between consuming nuts and its effect on heart health. They found that those who consumed a variety of nuts had lesser chance of a heart disease to those who do not consume nuts at all. The analysis included a study of 210,000 people which included women from the Nurses’ Health Study and Nurses’ Health Study II and men from the Health Professionals Follow-up Study. The analysis included up to 32 years of follow up.
After studying the lifestyle and health conditions of these people it was found that those who ate five or more helpings of nuts in a week had 14 percent lesser risk of cardiovascular disease and 20 percent lower risk of coronary heart disease. “Our findings support recommendations of increasing the intake of a variety of nuts, as part of healthy dietary patterns, to reduce the risk of chronic disease in the general populations,” said Marta Guasch-Ferre, PhD, lead author of the study and research fellow at the department of nutrition at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.
