It seems as though there is a never ending buzz around the recently inaugurated Indira Canteens, but this has come from an unusual source. Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) authorities claim zero waste from the recently opened Indira Canteens. BBMP commissioner Manjunath Prasad told Express there is a great demand of food waste from piggery.
“They want to come and collect waste from each Canteen. Transfer of food waste to the piggeries will help both the parties,” said the commissioner.Vinay Shetty from Cheftalk who works at Indira Canteen at Kanakanapalya Road in Chickpet constituency, said: “As we do not cook at canteen, no question of vegetable waste or any other wastage arises. But the food waste from the customers’ plates is stored in a container which is taken by the BBMP pourakarmikas everyday at 7 am.”
Mayor G Padmavathi said since there is no usage of plastic, they get only wet waste from Indira canteens which are taken by the respective ward pourakarmikas to the composting units. “It’s zero wastage from Indira Canteens,’’ she said. Srinivas, a resident of Nagarbhavi said, he tried a few canteens and they were neat and clean.
