Avocados Do Have An Achilles Heel And It Ain’t Pretty!

on

If you’ve been on the internet at any point in this century then you’ll have seen numerous articles on social media extolling the virtues of avocados. Those of us who like avocados, but don’t love avocados, have been oft-maligned on such forums, leaving us red-faced with no response. However, if you’re like me, this is your lucky day! You can finally shout out to every millennial – I told you so!

I always knew there was something dodgy about them when I discovered people were using them as a replacement for mugs. However, my suspicions were confirmed when avocados turned three men to crime (not a joke, you can read about it here).

All joking aside, according to an article from Economic Times, researchers from University of California San Francisco found that consuming excessive amounts of ‘good fats’ such as those found in olive oil and avocados may lead to fatty liver disease and increase the risk of diabetes and hypertension.

Turns out, simply counting calories does not guarantee a healthy diet. A diet high in monounsaturated fat, combined with high starch content, caused the most severe fatty liver disease, a risk factor for metabolic disorders. Basically, any high-fat diet (whether good fats or bad) along with a high starch content could have some serious repercussions.

I suppose the basic takeaway would be to enjoy everything in moderation. But, if you absolutely cannot live without your avocados, best to cut down on your starch intake (aka bye-bye avocado toast).
