A Popular Student Hangout In Mumbai Civil Café Shuts Down

on

The popular rooftop café amongst the IIT Bombay students, Civil Café has shut down according to a report by the Mumbai Mirror. The reason behind this is that the civil body did not grant the café a health license. The café apparently had removed non-vegetarian dishes from its menu due to which the controversy started.

The contractors of the café were given a notice by the BMC’s public health department on 2nd April that the corporation did not have a policy to convert the café into an eatery says the report by the publication. “We used to sit there and have long discussions and conversations. We used to like the open-air feel. Some cherished memories were created here,” Tony, a PhD student, told the Mumbai Mirror.

The report further explained that since the café wasn’t allowed to cook food they sourced it from the catering firm’s central kitchen situated in Andheri and then heated it up using a hotplate in the café. “After the BMC’s notice, we decided to shut down. They warned of action. Who wants to pay a hefty fine?” Santoshkumar Shetty, director, Saanvi Star Hospitality Pvt Ltd, told the Mumbai Mirror.
