A Look At Some Of Mumbai’s Favourite Types Of Chaat

Mumbai – indeed, all of India has an intense love affair with chaat. Chaat is made up of a variety of elements including potatoes, dahi, onions, coriander, sev and masala powder. There’re a multitude of permutations and combinations that you can use to make chaat. However, some traditional versions remain firm favourites; here are some of Mumbai’s preferred chaat variants.

Potatoes are chopped and fried in a large amount of hot oil and tossed with masala powder.

Puffed rice, sev, potatoes and chopped onions are mixed with masala powder and tamarind sauce and is scooped up and eaten with a piece of papadi; a hard, crunchy version of puri.

Dahi Puri

Dahi puri was born in Mumbai and remains a favourite because it’s incredibly refreshing. A puri shell is stuffed with mashed potatoes or chickpeas, followed by masala powders and then topped with spoonfuls of dahi. Finally, chopped coriander leaves and sev are used to garnish the puri pieces.

Panipuri

Another incredibly refreshing puri based chaat is panipuri, one of Mumbai’s absolute favourites. Hollowed out puris are filled with water, chutneys, potatoes, onions and chickpeas.
