We always tend to look towards quinoa, avocados, zucchini and other foods that burn a hole in the pocket. But they are healthy right? Yes, but did you know that health food doesn’t have to cost as much? Here’s a list of food items that are power packed with nutrients that you require on a daily basis. Plus it won’t cost you more than Rs.50 to buy them.

Lentils

Lentils or the good old dal are known immensely for their health factors across the globe. They are full of proteins and this is one of the best sources for the nutrient for vegetarians. Not only this, they are a great source of iron, fiber, folate and B vitamins. Drink up a bowlful of lentils and include it in your daily diet in the form of salads, soups or have it the traditional way with rice.

Spinach

These leafy greens are super loaded and are full of vitamins, folate, calcium, iron, phosphorus, potassium, copper, and manganese. Let’s not stop there. There are flavanoids present in spinach that act like antioxidants. These act like guards against free radicals and keeps the cholesterol from oxidizing. Now you know why Popeye loved his spinach so much!

Eggs

The ultimate energy boosting breakfast, eggs are famous for body builders as they need a protein-rich diet. Other than that they also have Vitamin D that can be a tad difficult to find in food. Packed with vitamins, selenium and choline this is another versatile ingredient that can make any dish shine.

Beans

Jam packed with fiber, potassium, magnesium and proteins, beans have a lot of benefits for your body. Good for the heart, great for controlling cholesterol, curbing iron deficiencies and also due to the presence of B vitamins they lower the risk of cardiovascular diseases too. So fill your diet with a lot of beans and see the results for yourself.

Cabbage

Vitamins A, K and C, folate, fiber and a good source of prebiotics, cabbage is one of the most versatile and humble vegetable which is only noticeable in coleslaw and ignored otherwise. Saute a bowl of grated cabbage with butter and some of your favorite veggies and you have a delicious, healthy snack. Sprinkle some nuts on top to make it wholesome.

Peanuts

Ad of course the health factor. Peanuts are full of vitamins, minerals, nutrients, anti-oxidants and protein. Handful of these will give you energy on the go. The best snack ever. Stop relying on the expensive peanut butter jars and eat the raw ones. Toss them in some poha or mix them with chopped onions, tomatoes and give a squeeze of lemon to make a 4 o’clock hunger snack.

Whey

Stop throwing away the liquid that you see in yoghurt because its an excellent source of B vitamins, is high in calcium and full of protein. This poor liquid is called whey and goes waste as we drain the thick curd out of it.
