With New Year comes new food trends, and with new food trends come new Instagram hashtags. 2016 saw an onslaught of some great, some questionable, and some downright crazy food trends. Right from marijuana, to rainbows, to unicorns, all made cameos in the 2016 food trend chart. And keeping up with the madness, 2017 too will not disappoint with a long list of fun food trends. Here’s all the food and drinks that would be trending over the next 365 days.
Gourmet Fast Food
Gourmet burgers are – and will be – big, but as fiscal times force consumers to be more economical with their spending, restaurants will continue to look for new, affordable dishes to serve in gourmet ways. Think loaded fries, fancy hot dogs, magical toasted sandwiches and panko-crusted fried chicken.
2016’s major health foods, alias “superfoods”, will be 2017’s super-spices, as the focus shifts from quinoa and avocado to healthy spices such as turmeric. Turmeric has recently climbed up the trending ladder for its various health aspects such as being an anti-oxidant and having anti-inflammatory properties. 2017 will be a year of similar super-spices.
Mainstreaming Health Foods
Health foods or foods that are in general healthy will take the spotlight in 2017. With products like WTRMLN WTR – the watermelon drink endorsed by Beyoncé – and Matcha Flat Whites gaining fame, next year looks as healthy as it’s going to be ‘indulgent’ (refer below).
Ice Cream Hybrids
We’ve seen a fair share of over the top absolutely uncanny hybrids, but the year to come will bring about yet another delicious food hybrid – ice cream and milkshakes, a.k.a., “freakshakes”. You may have seen some on the Internet, but these new shakes that have been labeled ‘occasional extreme indulgence’, will consist of a highly Intagram-able milkshake piled high with ice cream and other edibles.
And by sparkling we mean the ‘still or sparkling’ sparkly (basically fizzy). Carbonated beverages will be an active part of your pantry and refrigerators. With aerated blends like a sparkling matcha tea, sparkling sugar free infused water, and the likes already in the market, 2017 looks bubbly!
Purple is going to be the colour of the year in your kitchen. But why purple Well, simply because the purple squad, which feature vegetables like purple kale, purple carrots, purple cauliflower, purple broccoli and the purple potato are all amazingly rich in anthocyanins. Anthocyanins are the antioxidant responsible for their purple colour and have amazing disease fighting properties.
People are getting more and more concerned about their teeth and their dental health. One way to help prevent any infections and the build up of bacteria is by taking probiotics in a chewable form. Hence, chewable probiotics. Moreover, the probiotic water is also going to make it big.
Getting tired of all the berries and sweet flavours in your yogurt? Well, cheer up because in the US, product developers have infused the flavours of carrot, beetroot, sweet potato and tomato into yoghurt for a savoury accompaniment – rather like sour cream.
Move over Mediterranean diet, because the Hawaiian diet, a.k.a., Polynesian foods will be big in 2017. Foods like raw fish salad marinated with lime, soy and sesame and often served with rice are likely to be all over your social media feed next year.
This summer, London-based Cafe Royal teamed up with Givenchy to concoct 10 heady fragrance-inspired cocktails. And according to experts, the aromatic phenomenon will hop over to 2017 as well.
