Indian food mogul Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation owned Amul is looking towards Punjab for milk supply. The brand will obtain milk from about 1000 villages from the state, which will in turn provide annual benefits worth Rs 2,000 crore to dairy farmers in Punjab.

Branching Out

The Federation is planning on setting up a full-fledged system to test and collect the milk. NDTV quotes Federation’s MD, RS Sodhi, “What we are planning to do is to cover 1,000 villages of Punjab. In each village, we are putting up modern milk testing, weighment and bulk milk cooler system.

Speaking on the financial front he added, “each village’s investment is around Rs 15 lakh and so we are going to spend Rs 150 crore in villages for only milk procurement,”

While these 1,000 villages, average 2,000 litres milk from 100 families per village, so we will be giving a benefit of Rs 2,000 crore per annum to farmers of Punjab,” Sodhi, who also happens to be a native from Punjab, stated.milk

Why Punjab?

Numbers reflect that Punjab has the highest production of milk per capita. While the rest of the country produce/ consumes 300 grams per person everyday, Punjab churns out a litre and Gujarat Gujarat’s contribution is 500 grams. This vast gap is majorly because of farmers’ better know how of breeding animals in Punjab.storyimages_1331829918_cow

The announcement regarding Amul spreading out its branches in Punjab come after RS Sodhi’s discussion with Punjab Deputy CM Sukhbir Singh Badal and Union Food Processing Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal.
